The 8% “No Withdrawal” Retirement Portfolio

Conventional retirement investment wisdom is wrong. It says that you have to accept low dividend yields, draw down your principal at 4% a year, and forego any stock price growth in the name of “safety.” You can meet your income needs and even grow, rather than diminish, your principal, but you must accept the higher volatility that higher yield brings in the form of mortgage REITs. If you can, 8% yields are yours without unnecessary risk.

You will Learn

• Why you don’t need to settle for the “4% a year” rule – or use up your principal.

• How to identify the right REITs and closed-end bond funds for higher and growing retirement income

• What mortgage REITs are and how to get the mega-yields with reduced risk

Tom Jacobs is a partner at Huckleberry Capital Management, a boutique investment advisory firm serving clients in 27 states and foreign countries from Marfa, TX; New Jersey; and Asheville, NC. As is Tom, the other Huckleberry partners are ex-Motley Fool, sharing the same values and skepticism of the financial services industry, and he has been investing since his Dad encouraged him in 1968. He is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Chicago Law School, the author of How to Retire on Dividends: Earn a Safe 8%, Leave Your Principal Intact (The Marfa Group, 2019); Rule of 72: How to Compound Your Money and Uncover Hidden Stock Profits (Dent Research, 2016), and What’s Behind the Numbers? How to Expose Financial Chicanery and Avoid Huge Losses in Your Portfolio (McGraw-Hill, 2012), and series editor of the republication of Maurece Schiller’s collected works on special situations.

You will benefit from a combination of tutorial presentations and active discussions that range from use of options to generate monthly income, "hedging" for protection of your stocks and directional trades.  Participant experience ranges from initial learning to active traders. We work closely with the AAII Fundamental Stocks and Investment Protection SIGs.

Estate Planning and Administration SIG – Kristel Patton, SIG Leader

There are many misconceptions surrounding estate planning and estate administration. This SIG will help sort the truth from fiction by focusing on various estate planning and administration topics, including using trust-based estate plans to plan for incapacity and death; advance health care directives; using powers of attorney; differences in probate and trust administration; and how to organize your affairs to aid in efficient and cost-effective administration of your estate.
