Closed-End Funds, Business Development Companies & Interval Funds: Income and Opportunity – Zoom
John Cole Scott, CFS — President & CIO
CEF Advisors & CEF Data
John will cover the overview and recent trends in Closed-End Funds, Business Development Companies and Interval Funds.
A Closed-End Fund [CEF] is an investment structure/vehicle as defined by the Investment Company Act of 1940 and features: Fixed pool of capital, Active management and Daily liquidity. A CEF shares trade like stocks. Funds can trade at prices both below NAV (discount) and above (premium). Earnings are passed through to investors in the form of dividends and distributions. CEFs often utilized debt/leverage (such as margin loans or preferred shares)
Business Development Companies [BDCs] are closed-end funds that provide small, growing companies access to capital. BDCs typically have a higher fee structure.
John Cole is proud to lead CEF Advisors and continue the legacy of his father, George, a pioneer in closed-end investments who bought into the firm in 1996. After earning his bachelor’s degree from William and Mary, John Cole joined his father at the firm in 2001, launching his own rewarding and distinguished career.
Today John Cole is regarded as one of the foremost experts in the industry, and is frequently consulted by investment groups, professional organizations, and the national financial press for his deep insight and knowledge about closed-end fund (CEF), business development company (BDC), and interval fund data, research, and investing. Highly motivated and goal-oriented, he is driven by his passion for the industry, building meaningful connections with people, and a deeply personal aspiration to do hard things well.
In 2008, John Cole founded CEFData.com, a data service now covering all U.S. listed and non-listed CEFs, BDCs, and interval funds. In 2019, he also founded the Active Investment Company Alliance (AICA), and serves as its executive chairman. John Cole holds the FINRA 66 license and the Certified Fund Specialist® (CFS®) designation.

AAII Fundamental Stocks SIG – In-person Karen Kamenir , SIG Leader
Most often individuals only have the experience of their own situation, and not the experience of time and many situations. This SIG is a discussion of how advisors see things from their experience of working with many clients, at all stages of their investments, planning, taxes and risk management stages of client lives over decades. Knowing how advisors see things from their experiences can help individuals improve their own outcomes, and if they work with an advisor, how to get more from the relationship.
12:15 to 1:15 pm
Personal Finance & Retirement Income SIG – In-person Urban Adams , SIG Leader
Due to greater uncertainties, financial planning after retirement becomes more challenging. We all want to make good decisions. Where most investors get into trouble is not in their intent, it’s in their emotions and habits. The SIG’s focus is educating members how-to make informed financial decisions which are in their best interests.
1:15 to 2:15 pm
